What Is a Truck Scale?

Truck scales are specialized devices that measure the weight of a truck or trailer using a weighbridge, load cells or weigh bars and digital display. If the loads being weighed are being bought or sold, the scale must be “legal for trade” or officially certified for accurate measurements.

  • Weighbridge: This is what the truck drives on to be weighed. Weighbridges are designed to withstand heavy loads, so they’re typically made from steel or concrete.
  • Load cells or weigh bars: The sensors are located beneath the weighbridge. They use pressure to measure the vehicle’s weight.
  • Digital display: This displays the vehicle’s weight in pounds or kilograms.

While most truck scales are permanently installed, portable truck scales offer flexibility during construction and repairs. They’re also extremely helpful when quarries move plants.
