Benefits of Automating Warehouse Order Picking Systems

Automated systems help workers locate, retrieve, and transport items much faster, significantly boosting the number of orders your warehouse can process. This translates to faster order fulfillment times and happier customers.
Guided order-picking systems minimize human error that happens with manual picking.
The shortage of warehouse workers isn’t expected to improve anytime soon. Automation creates long-term savings and helps you put employees to better use.
Repetitive tasks and heavy lifting puts your workers at risk of injuries and expensive workers’ compensation claims. Automation keeps workers safe by removing them from physically demanding activities.
We can easily scale your automation system as your business grows. You’ll be able to better respond to increased order volume without hiring more employees.

Types of Automated Order Picking Systems

Pick to light order picking

Pick-to-Light

Pick-to-light systems use lights and displays to guide workers directly to the items they need. When an order comes in, the system illuminates lights at specific storage locations, often accompanied by a digital display showing the exact quantity to pick. This eliminates the need for paper pick lists and reduces errors by visually directing pickers to the right items. Pick-to-light is a fast, efficient way to improve order fulfillment accuracy, especially for high-volume warehouses with frequently picked items.

Voice Picking

With voice-picking systems, workers wear headsets that receive spoken instructions from a central system. These instructions tell them exactly where to go in the warehouse, what item to pick, and the quantity needed. Workers then confirm their actions verbally and move on to the next pick. This frees up workers’ hands and eyes, allowing them to focus on picking and navigating the warehouse efficiently. This can significantly improve picking speed and accuracy compared to traditional paper-based methods.

Semi- and Fully Automated Picking

Fully automated picking systems don’t need people to fulfill orders. Instead, they use a combination of robots, vertical lift modules, conveyor systems and packaging systems to locate, select and transport goods before preparing them for shipment. These systems are best for the highest-demand and highest-volume warehouses where efficiency, accuracy and speed are critical. Semi-automated systems are also available, where human employees work alongside automated systems like VLMs and AS/RS, conveyors and end-of-line packaging.
